Everyone has had a bad hair day -- that feeling that our hair just doesn’t have the life it should! So we go into the cabinet or into our row of shampoo bottles in the shower and try something new. Sometimes this works, most times it doesn’t. What many of us forget is that most shampoos only work on a superficial level.
Healthy hair is a solid indicator of good overall health. We believe that supporting our body’s natural beauty is far better than pumping our hair full of unnecessary irritants.
Rather than stripping away and replacing your hair’s natural oil, why not give your hair the natural nutrients it needs?
Yes! Healthy skin and healthy scalps both produce what is known as sebum. Sebum is an oil that helps to protect our hair and our skin from bacterial and fungal infections. Our body’s natural oil production is critical for overall health.
Natural sebum production also helps to lock in your body’s moisture. Healthy levels of oil in your hair help to achieve a healthy, shimmering, full-bodied appearance. Sebum also prevents oxidative damage and other common problems like split ends.
Of course, the overproduction of sebum can cause issues as well. For the skin, excess oil production can cause skin conditions such as acne. For the scalp and hair, excess sebum can cause an oily, dull, and a matted down appearance.
So what natural ingredients can we use for hair care that supports our body’s natural oil production? What we recommend is a hair care product or products which do not strip away your hair’s oil while supplying nutrients directly to the scalp and hair!
Essential oils are a great candidate for natural hair care. Essential oils take natural plant products and are distilled down into usable oils. Carrier oils are more stable, and may not need to be distilled from their natural form.
Examples of essential oils and carrier oils which are great for natural hair care include:
The majority of people have gone their entire lives using shampoo and conditioner bottles for hair care. While these products are certainly effective in their own way, shampoo bars offer unique advantages for those wishing to protect their natural hair. For more on shampoo bars vs liquid shampoo, check out this article.
Shampoo bars are gentle and non-stripping. **Note** this is not true of all shampoo bars, but it is true of many. Look for shampoo bars that are free of parabens, sulfates, silicone, and synthetic compounds. Shampoo bars can be oil-based, allowing for a product which supplies nutrients to your hair without stripping away healthy sebum!
Shampoo bars hydrate and protect natural hair. Jam packed with essential oils and carrier oils, natural shampoo bars are effective at treating, protecting, and hydrating hair without the damaging side effects.
Shampoo bars are zero waste, easy-to-use, and great for the road. Last but not least, shampoo bars are super efficient and easy to use! They are ideal for travel (avoid that pesky liquid size restriction), they are environmentally friendly, and they offer a great bang for your buck.
There is no one answer for every individual, but there are certainly a few guidelines. Over-washing can cause hair damage regardless of how natural your shampoo or shampoo bar product. As a general rule, try washing your hair twice a week and adjust to your personal preference. Remember that gently rinsing your hair with regular water is okay in between washes!
There are many naturally occurring essential oils and carrier oils which promote hair health. Lavender oil, chamomile oil, almond oil, rosemary oil, and geranium oil are just a few examples. As with anything else, it is possible to overdo oil hair treatments.
Traditional shampoos have been used to clean hair while traditional conditioners are used to moisturize and restore dry hair. This seems like a logical relationship, but modern hair care products have gone another route: provide a product that cleans and strengthens hair without the stripping action of traditional shampoos!
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a very common ingredient in traditional shampoos. Sulfates are used to get a desirable lather and strip away impurities from your hair. Unfortunately, sulfates also strip hair of its natural, healthy oils. Consider looking for sulfate-free alternatives for healthy, beautiful hair.
