Holistic Skincare for Overall Health and Beauty

It is only natural for us to think of skin in terms of appearance only. After all, our skin is what we present to the world each and every day! The skin is also the largest organ in the human body. Beneath the surface is a myriad of complex systems which keep us healthy and safe.

With this in mind, today we will explore how holistic health care can benefit your skin andhow healthy skin habits can benefit your overall health!

Role of the Skin in Overall Health

The average adult has skin that weighs approximately 8 pounds and covers an area of over 20 square feet. Yeah…. That’s a lot. Now consider how many of us take our skin for granted.

The skin’s primary function is to protect the rest of our body from outside harm. Outside harm may come in the form of moisture, irritants, blunt trauma, cuts, burns, and so forth. Your skin may not feel like a suit of armor, but when you imagine life without it, you can see how valuable it truly is!

Healthy skin regulates body temperature through sweat glands and through contraction/expansion of the skin. It also plays an important role in keeping us safe through pain receptorsthat react to dangerous stimuli.

The list truly goes on and on, including storing fat, growing hair, clotting blood, producing melanin, absorbing Vitamin D, and much more!

Healthy Skin can Lead to Better Holistic Health

So how can healthy skin lead to better holistic health? This ties in directly to all of the essential skin functions we listed above. Healthy, moisturized skin can keep us safe and of course, keep us looking our best. Here are a few skincare tips for healthy, beautiful skin:

Utilize smart sun protection:long, sunny days are a great way to relax and unwind. Unfortunately, UVA and UVB rays can also lead to short and long term skin damage including deadly melanoma. Cover up when possible, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with 15 SPF or higher.

Avoid harmful skincare products and/or ingredients:so many cosmetics, skincare products, and hair care products these days are packed with synthetic chemicals. Chemicals such as parabens and sulfates have been shown to irritate and even damage the skin. Stick with all natural skincare products when possible.

Moisturize:doctors and beauty bloggers alike agree that moisturization is extremely important for healthy skin. Try using a gentle, natural moisturizer once daily for best results.

Health Tips for Healthy, Beautiful Skin

Now that we have reviewed some skin-specific health tips, what are some holistic methods to keep our skin in top condition? Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Avoid alcohol: alcohol is essentially a toxin. Consuming alcohol regularly or a large quantity at once can have damaging effects on your skin. Skin can suffer dehydration, cell damage, higher insulin levels, hormone disruptions, and much more.
  • Avoid tobacco: smoking is one of the fastest ways to age your skin prematurely. Tobacco has also been linked to worsening skin conditions including psoriasis. Of course, all of this is in addition to the fact that all tobacco products are carcinogens and carry a risk of heart and lung disease.
  • Stay hydrated: no, drinking 8 glasses of water a day is not a miracle cure. Yet hydration absolutely plays a critical role in skin health. Just stay ahead of your thirst and drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • Stick to a healthy diet: again, diet is not the primary cause of skin issues, but a healthy diet can help your skin stay healthy and strong!

Holistic Skincare Frequently Asked Questions

Does stress affect skin health?

While stress by itself will not cause skin conditions, it can certainly be a factor in exacerbating an existing condition. WebMD explains: “stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. It can also make it harder for skin problems to heal.”

Does natural skin care actually work?

That depends on the natural skin care! On one hand, it is certainly possible to use only natural ingredients and methods to retain healthy and beautiful skin. On the other hand, simply being “natural” does not mean a skin care product or regimen will be effective.

Does sleep affect skin health?

Without a doubt, yes. Most of us can even answer this question through personal experience upon waking up with swollen eyes, pale skin, wrinkles, and dark under eyes. No two individuals are exactly alike, but most adults require between 7 and 9 hours per sleep nightly.
