It is only natural for us to think of skin in terms of appearance only. After all, our skin is what we present to the world each and every day! The skin is also the largest organ in the human body. Beneath the surface is a myriad of complex systems which keep us healthy and safe.
With this in mind, today we will explore how holistic health care can benefit your skin and how healthy skin habits can benefit your overall health!
The average adult has skin that weighs approximately 8 pounds and covers an area of over 20 square feet. Yeah…. That’s a lot. Now consider how many of us take our skin for granted.
The skin’s primary function is to protect the rest of our body from outside harm. Outside harm may come in the form of moisture, irritants, blunt trauma, cuts, burns, and so forth. Your skin may not feel like a suit of armor, but when you imagine life without it, you can see how valuable it truly is!
Healthy skin regulates body temperature through sweat glands and through contraction/expansion of the skin. It also plays an important role in keeping us safe through pain receptors that react to dangerous stimuli.
The list truly goes on and on, including storing fat, growing hair, clotting blood, producing melanin, absorbing Vitamin D, and much more!
So how can healthy skin lead to better holistic health? This ties in directly to all of the essential skin functions we listed above. Healthy, moisturized skin can keep us safe and of course, keep us looking our best. Here are a few skincare tips for healthy, beautiful skin:
Utilize smart sun protection: long, sunny days are a great way to relax and unwind. Unfortunately, UVA and UVB rays can also lead to short and long term skin damage including deadly melanoma. Cover up when possible, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with 15 SPF or higher.
Avoid harmful skincare products and/or ingredients: so many cosmetics, skincare products, and hair care products these days are packed with synthetic chemicals. Chemicals such as parabens and sulfates have been shown to irritate and even damage the skin. Stick with all natural skincare products when possible.
Moisturize: doctors and beauty bloggers alike agree that moisturization is extremely important for healthy skin. Try using a gentle, natural moisturizer once daily for best results.
