Top 8 Uses of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Back in 2016, we wrote about five (5) reasons we love coconut oil. Since the posting of that article, organic virgin coconut oil has become even more of a staple ingredient in our expanding family of skin, hair, and beauty care products

With this in mind, here are 8 uses for organic virgin coconut oil that you can incorporate into your diet, skincare regimen, hair care regimen, and much more!

1. Coconut Oil is a Natural Eczema Treatment

WebMD.com lists a single scientifically proven use for coconut oil as a medical aid: for the treatment of eczema. Studies have shown that topical coconut oil reduces eczema symptoms by more than 30 percent in children compared to mineral oil alone.

Eczema is a very common skin condition with no known cure. Coconut oil is a natural and effective eczema management tool due to its high lauric acid levels.

While it is quite possible to manage eczema in children and adults, it should be noted that any individual experiencing significant discomfort, apparent infection, or prolonged eczema symptoms should see a dermatologist to receive necessary medical care.

2. Moisturizing with Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural alternative to store bought moisturizers. Scientific research has determined that coconut oil is extremely effective at hydrating mild to moderately dry skin. If you are looking to ditch that heavy moisturizer, organic virgin coconut oil just might do the trick!

3. Dietary Oils for Healthy Weight Gain

While many of us are struggling to fit into our pair of jeans from a few years ago, there are a litany of medical and personal reasons to gain weight. Coconut oil as a dietary supplement or as a staple ingredient delivers highly concentrated, nutrient-rich calories.

Whereas other ingredients like peanut butter, dairy butter, and processed meats may offer similar calorie bang for their buck, coconut oil is a healthier option alongside other alternatives such as extra virgin olive oil.

4. Coconut Oil for Damaged Hair

The benefits of coconut oil for damaged hair comes down to the fatty acids within. These rich and medium-chain fatty acids are great ways to naturally moisturize and replenish sagging hair. Virgin coconut oil is a great everyday hair care ingredient in products such as our shampoo bars.

We should also point out that while coconut oil is great for damaged hair, it is also healthy for all hair types and conditions!

5. Coconut Oil for Medium-High Heat Cooking

Most people have already heard about how healthy cooking with coconut oil can be. What is less discussed is how well coconut oil acts as a replacement to “traditional” cooking oils such as olive oil and peanut oil.

There is a catch, however. Virgin coconut oil (AKA unrefined coconut oil) has a smoke point of ~350 degrees Fahrenheit. This would be considered appropriate for low to medium heat cooking.

Refined coconut oil has a smoking point of between 400 to 450 Fahrenheit, putting it on par with most kitchen staples and able to handle high temperatures for stir fry, pan searing, and other high heat cooking methods.

6. Antibacterial and Anti-Inflammatory Purposes

This is a topic we touched on in our initial article a few years back. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of coconut oil are truly astonishing for a natural product. This is particularly important when it comes to applications on the skin and the hair. These properties also help our all natural foot cream soothe and protect your skin!

It is easy to forget that our skin is our body’s natural defense against the outside world, including harmful bacteria and yeast! Lauric acid, the main component of virgin coconut oil, has been shown to be effective at killing common fungi which can cause athlete’s foot and yeast infections.

7. Replace Your Lip Balm with Natural Coconut Oil

Pure, virgin coconut oil is a highly effective moisturizer for your lips just as it is for your skin. The same fatty acids can help to hydrate, replenish, and rejuvenate lips to keep your mouth feeling soft, moisturized, and healthy all day long!

8. Coconut Oil as a Cholesterol-Friendly Alternative

Last but not least (we had to stop somewhere), coconut oil has been shown to be a healthier alternative to other traditional cooking fats such as dairy butter. In fact, a randomised trial testing coconut oil, olive oil, and butter on LDL and HDL levels in the blood concluded that coconut oil had a similarly healthy impact on cholesterol as olive oil, where butter had a more negative response.

Many nutritionists still recommend eating fats like virgin coconut oil in moderation, but scientific research has shown that coconut oil is a healthy choice for rich, delicious meals!
