Hemp oil can sometimes get a bad rap due to its association with marijuana and CBD products. This is unfortunate, as hemp oil is a natural and versatile oil which can be used in the diet and as a topical ingredient in skin and hair care applications. Additionally, hemp fiber is ideal for use in washcloths for daily cleansing.
What are the benefits of hemp oil? Here are five of the many uses for hemp oil for skin health, dietary health, and more!
Like many essential oils and carrier oils, hemp oil boasts a rich profile of fatty acids and vitamins. These vital nutrients are effective as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging agents. Hemp oil also may fight against acne by providing nutrients that the skin needs. This goes against common skincare myths that acne patients should avoid oils at all costs.
Hemp oil in the diet has also been shown to have a potential positive impact on brain health by reducing brain inflammation in mice. While additional testing is needed to prove this claim one way or another, scientists generally agree that the nutrient profile of hemp oil contains essential nutrients for brain and heart health.
As briefly mentioned in a previous section, hemp oil is a great way to keep acne under control. Applying hemp oil directly to the affected area(s) naturally moisturizes the skin and promotes healthy sebum levels. Ironically, dry skin which goes untreated by natural oils may cause your body to produce excess levels of sebum (natural oil), which can lead to acne.
Remember, acne is not just caused by oil on the surface of your skin. It may be caused by clogged pores, excess oil production, a bacterial infection, and more! Healthy usage of natural oils such as hemp oil can restore your skin’s healthy balance.
One of the primary omega-6 fatty acids contained in hemp oil is gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Recent studies have shown that GLA is a powerful anti-inflammatory which may help to reduce swelling, improve blood flow, and reduce the visible appearance of aging. Hemp oil is effective as a face oil, as part of a skin serum, or even as an ingredient in your everyday bar of soap!
Last but not least, hemp oil has a perfect comedogenic score of 0. This means that hemp oil will not clog pores, cause breakouts, lead to blackheads or whiteheads, or leave your face feeling overly moisturized. This rare trait combined with the rich nutrient profile of hemp oil makes this a perfect product for everyday use.
Low comedogenic ratings and densely packed nutrients make hemp seed oil ideal for all skin types. If you have found other oil based products too “heavy” in the past, it might be time to give hemp oil a chance!
No, hemp oil and CBD oils are quite different. Both come from cannabis, but the source and the method(s) of extraction vary dramatically. CBD stands for cannabidiol, the active ingredient in many CBD products. The trace amounts of CBD and THC which naturally exist in hemp oil are generally extracted during the manufacturing process.
Absolutely not. Hemp oil is not at all similar to marijuana products which create a mind altering effect. Hemp oil is completely safe for use in the diet and as a skincare ingredient.
While CBD oil has been touted as an anxiety treatment (more research has been called for to substantiate this claim), hemp oil has no such effect. Again, hemp oil is free of significant levels of CBD or THC which would have an impact on your body’s overall standing. Think of hemp oil as just another natural oil which can be used in the diet or on the skin!
