Benefits of Geranium Oil for Skin

Essential oils have grown in popularity, and for good reason. They come from many different powerful plants and each essential oil has its own portfolio of amazing benefits. Some of the most popular essential oils are lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint, however, today we’d like to introduce one of our favorites that are less commonly known: Geranium Essential Oil. This spectacular essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves of the pelargonium graveolens. This is a unique plant that is native to South Africa but can be found growing in other regions such as Europe and Asia. There are many variations of this plant, and each has its own floral fragrance, however, the compositions, benefits, and uses are all the same.

Geranium oil vs. Rose geranium oil

Geranium oil and Rose geranium oil are likely to both show up on your quest to find geranium essential oil. They come from the different varieties of the Pelargonium graveolens plant species that we talked about earlier. The properties and benefits of the two are almost identical. However, the rose geranium essential oil is often preferred over the geranium oil simply because of its intense floral aroma that is often used in perfumes, lotions, and soaps. If you are sensitive to fragrances, choosing geranium oil is the best option.

What Makes Geranium Oil?

The four main chemical constituents of geranium essential oil include:

  1. Linalool- is a compound that has the following characteristics: sedative, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-epileptic.
  2. Geranyl formate- is an anti-fungal, hepatoprotective, and aromatic.
  3. Citronellol- is believed to be anti-fungal, sedative, anti-viral, anti-microbial, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and finally anti-convulsant.
  4. Geraniol- provides antioxidants, is antibacterial, antiseptic, and analgesic.

Fight of Acne

Geranium essential oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic. As a result, geranium essential oil is the ultimate ingredientto kicking acne’s butt. It has the ability to reduce acne breakouts, skin irritation and skin infections by fighting and preventing the growth of bacteria, overproduction of oil and fungus.

Reduces Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Many consider geranium essential oil to be anti-aging. This is because of the astringent properties that reduce fine lines and wrinkles while tightening pores and firming the skin.

Hydrating and Smoothing

Packed full of nutrients, geranium oil has the ability to be very nourishing, leaving the skin hydrated. If you suffer from dry skin, geranium seals in the moisture for longer lasting effects, promoting smooth and supple skin.

Healing Scars

Because Geranium is anti-inflammatory, it is great on wounds and reduces the inflammation of the skin. Additionally, geranium promotes new cell growth, and as a result, speeds up the healing process of the skin.

Benefits of Geranium Oil Used in Aromatherapy

Geranium oil is a very fragrant oil used in many perfumes and cosmetics. Due to its floral scent, many have used geranium oil for aromatherapy. It is known to reduce stress and anxiety while acting as a mood booster and promotes relaxation. If you suffer from insomnia or fatigue, you may find relief in geranium oil as well.

Surprising Uses and Benefits of Geranium

Many essential oils have great uses beyond aromatherapy and addressing skin concerns, geranium is no different. Geranium essential oil has many surprising uses with great benefits for the body which is why it has been praised as a powerful oil to add to your daily routine. Some of these benefits include:

  • Eases Nasal Vestibulitis by treating nasal symptoms such as bleeding, scabbing, pain, and dryness.
  • Benefits those who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases (think Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease). A studydone showed the citronellol found in geranium essential oil reduced inflammation and cell death in the brain.
  • Eases some symptoms of menopause and perimenopause. Geranium essential oil helps balance the hormones, especially in women who are showing signs of reduced estrogen levels. Used as an aromatherapy, the essential oil is very beneficial for these women.
  • Reduces allergic reactions. Those who suffer from allergies may find geranium essential oil very helpful due to the citronellol content. This essential not only reduces the allergic reactions, but the anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the itching that accompanies many allergic reactions.

It is important to note that geranium essential oil is not to be consumed internally. This essential oil can be used topically or added into an oil diffuser for purposes of aromatherapy.

At The Yellow Bird, we have added geranium oil as a special ingredient in many of our products as we believe and are confident in its natural and powerful benefits.
