Simple and Effective At-Home Hair Routines

With seemingly endless amounts of information to sort through, it can be difficult to pin down a simple, effective, and affordable hair care routine. Yet it is entirely doable for individuals with all hair types to find a routine that works.

Alright, so let’s look at some high level tips for healthy hair that hold true for most individuals, go over an example of an effective hair care regimen, and briefly discuss how you can select hair care products that will meet your individual needs.

Top 5 Tips for Healthy Hair

Before we get into an at-home routine, it is important to understand how our hair is affected by our everyday activities. Here are five (5) ways to keep your hair looking and feeling great!

  • Take care of your scalp first. Healthy hair starts at the root, and scalp issues can absolutely cause hair issues as well. Common scalp problems include dandruff, psoriasis, and allergies. If you are experiencing scalp discomfort, switching hair care products and speaking to a dermatologist is recommended.
  • Don’t overdo it! Your hair is strong, but it can be damaged by excessive use of shampoos, heat, blow dryers, hair straighteners, and more.
  • Avoid super hot showers. As an extension of our last tip, those boiling hot showers we are all guilty of taking from time to time can damage hair by drying it out. This can lead hair dye to fade and for natural oils to be lost in the process.
  • Maintain a haircut schedule. Split ends and frayed hair are often the results of staying away from the salon. Try not to go more than 2 months without a trim.
  • Keep hair care as natural as possible. This is not only a reference to choosing all-natural products, but also letting hair air dry, keeping it out of ponytails, and avoiding harsh styling products (at least sometimes).

Simple, Affordable, and Effective Hair Care Routines

So how can we implement a simple and effective hair care routine? While there is no one great answer, here is a typical hair care routine which should fit most lifestyles and budgets:

Wash your hair only when necessary

This is where understanding your hair type becomes so important. Individuals with more oily hair may opt for frequent hair washing while individuals with dry hair may want to limit hair washing to once or twice per week.

Use all natural shampoo

The heavy lifter in any hair care routine is going to be the shampoo. Many modern shampoos utilize synthetic chemicals such as parabens and sulfates which can damage hair and irritate your skin. Instead, consider all natural artisan shampoo bars. Shampoo bars offer great value, reduce waste, and are extremely effective for creating healthy, beautiful hair!

Allow hair to dry naturally

Many of us reach straight for the hairdryer, straightener, or even for a hair tie when we get out of the shower. Instead, allowing hair to dry naturally without too much fuss will result in a healthy, fuller body of hair.

Use hair conditioner and other products sparingly

Depending on your hair type and individual needs, you may want to incorporate conditioners, hair serums, and other hair care products. In addition to a nourishing shampoo bar, proper conditioner use can allow it to remain soft, shiny, and full-bodied!

At-Home Hair Care FAQs

Should I use shampoo or go “no poo”?

Silly name aside, going no poo (skipping shampoo altogether) is a trend in hair care that seems to only be building in momentum. The theory here is that shampoos and conditioners simply are not necessary for individuals to have beautiful, healthy hair.

The fact of the matter is that hair needs to be cleaned just like any other body part. So sometypes of products must be used. Switching to a natural, synthetic-free shampoo bar is superior to skipping shampoo altogether because shampoo bars cleanse your hair without stripping away any of the hair’s natural oils (the main reason for more no-poo idealists).

How Often Should I Wash my Hair?

As we touched on in a previous section, this answer is quite individual. You must consider your hair type, skin type, and the nature of the product you are using. All natural shampoo bars may be used daily as they are free of harsh synthetics and irritants. Find the schedule which works best for you and stick with it!

Can I go to bed with wet hair?

Yes and no. First, going to bed with wet hair is not going to make you sick unless you are already sleeping in a frigid environment. Yet it might not do your hair any favors either. The key is to never go to sleep with soaking wet hair. This can cause hair to clump up and lose body. Partially wet hair before bed may actually be a healthy way to allow hair to air dry while retaining its natural body and shine.
