Why should I use a shampoo bar instead of liquid shampoo?
Your scalp naturally excretes oils to protect and nourish your hair. Unfortunately liquid shampoos cleanse hair with detergents that can strip it of all its natural oils. This can cause your scalp to overreact and create an excessive amount of oils that consequently requires more frequent washing.
Our natural shampoo bar cleans without stripping hair of its natural oils. Many people have even reported scalp conditions improving due to the absence of washing without harsh chemicals.
Why does it take time for hair to adjust to natural shampoo bars?
Some people experience heavy, dull, or greasy hair for a period of time after switching to a natural shampoo bar. This is the result of chemical residue and buildup getting worked out of hair. Additionally the scalp is learning to adjust and regulate its proper oil production.
This transitional period can range anywhere from one day to one month. Hair length, genetics, and the amount of built up hair product can impact the actual length of time. Included within our boxes are some helpful tips for a smoother transition.
Here’s a couple blog post on the topic that provide great tips and advice:
How many washes will one shampoo bar provide?
Since it is not a liquid, one bar has a concentration equivalence of multiple shampoo bottles. Mileage however may vary depending on washing habits. The longer a bar is exposed to water the faster it will break down.
I had already had another shampoo bar as my first and liked it after getting through the transition period. I found after moving that that shampoo bar was building up and making my hair heavy and I didn't want to use acv but I finished it so it wouldn't go to waste. Decided to try this one and I could smell it before I even opened the box and was sad that the smell of lavender was very heavy with the other scents not really coming through to me and I'm not big on lavender and prefer more fruity or softer scents. Not a great start but decided to still give it a shot. I started washing my hair and was surprised by how easily it slid on my hair and how much it bubbled even with my hard water. When I rinsed it my hair actually felt a bit dry even though I have somewhat oily hair and was a bit knotted but that was probably just me rubbing the bar around excited about the bubbles. My hair is drying right now but I can already tell it got that build up out and my curls are fluffing up as they should and the parts that are dry now feel very smooth and soft. Other than the lavender smell being a bit overpowering I really like this shampoo bar and am glad I chose this as my next bar.
I love the charcoal face wash, but the shampoo is still not working for me. I’ve strictly only used the bar since the middle of August, and I’m at the end of October now... my hair is still not adjusted the the natural bar. I’m incredibly bummed because I love the concept of zero waste products but my hair still has a gross dirty waxy feeling after rinsing it repeatedly and fully each time. I also have a short hair cut, so it isn’t too hard to get a full rinse. Maybe it’s just my hair type, but after using this shampoo bar one to two days a week, I still have a residue that makes my hair feel yucky :(
Everyone is saying it takes two weeks, so I’m not sure why after 10 weeks I’m still experiencing the “transitional” phase. Ugh.
This product was better than I had expected. I have been transitioning to zero waste products for a few months, and my biggest barrier was switching to Shampoo Bars. It takes a bit of practice to use them properly, but I have to say that The Yellow Bird bar was the one I had the least issues transitioning with.
I was looking for a healthier alternative for my hair and scalp and this is it. With regular shampoo I was always pulling out a ton of hair in the shower. This bar has eliminated that. Full disclosure: the 2 week adjustment period is real but stick it out! The benefits are totally worth it!
After years of struggling with my sensitive hair, which is very fine and highly prone to getting greasy, I discovered the Yellow Bird and decided to try this shampoo bar. The product description points out that it takes your hair about two weeks to adjust to the new shampoo - which is definitely true - but after those two weeks I have had the most amazing results! My normally-greasy hair is now beautiful, soft, and healthy in both feel and appearance. For the first time in my life I can wash my hair every other day without it turning into a grease ball. And best of all is the way I feel knowing how much healthier this product is for my body and the environment than convential shampoos!
